Project Description:
David is a
photographer and poet who aspires to learn and absorb through his
environment and gain inspiration and techniques through other
artists. Through his project, David plans to grow and
diversify his business through various marketing tools, and the
purchasing of new equipment to utilize new techniques in expanding
his photography.

Description:
Motivated by two
factors: Injustice in Indian Country and the desire to address
changes in his lifetime, Bunky is an accomplished artist, poet and
painter. Bunky’s plan for the next year is to gain wider exposure,
expand his collector base and corner the traditional Indian art
market. He will re-design his website, build up a substantial stock
of fine art prints, design a line of t-shirts, design and print art
catalogs, have CD’s of his original music pressed, and stock up on
general art supplies to create new bodies of work.

Description:
Beverly is a
self-taught beadwork artist. She has creates dance regalia for
children as well as other traditional items. Beverly’s artwork has
led to the creation of her own company, “Dancing Beads by Bear King,
LLC” in the past year. Beverly plans to determine through market
analysis the best market for “Dancing Beads by Bear King” by
participating in art shows geographically located throughout the
US. She will continue to grow her business through the creation of
a website, business plan, and the creation and development of
various marketing materials.

Description:
Lillian is an
accomplished artist who has been exhibiting her contemporary
sculptures, carvings, masks, glass, wearable art and works on paper
for over 20 years. She says this about her work: “I use the ancient
stories of my ancestors as a basis for the imagery I create. By
doing this I maintain the memory of an ancient culture and keep the
beliefs of my people alive.” She is known nationally and
internationally for her Raku and Anagama fired ceramic and bronze
masks and "Shadow Spirit" totem images based on traditional symbols
and spirits of her Columbia River ancestors. Lillian’s project this
year will be to create glass editions of her “Shadow Spirit” series
of six to coincide with a reprint of “Spirits Keep Whistling Us
Home” catalogue.

Description:
Stephanie is a
traditional bead and quill work artist. She uses traditional
techniques and methods in creating her art while she throws in a
“little spice” of herself making each piece unique. Stephanie pays
special attention to detail and quality in each piece she creates.
All her art work is not only considered to be art, but also
practical as they can be utilized as they were intended to be.
Stephanie plans to expand her client base by creating and utilizing
various marketing tools and attending art shows.

Description:
Mary and her
husband Francis are self taught artists who have been creating and
selling traditional art for the past 25 years and at a national
level for the past five years. Francis and Mary state that
their motivations
come from a need to create and have people moved by their work. They
applied to First Peoples Fund in an effort to access new marketing
opportunities. The couple believe that Dakota values and their
entrepreneurial spirit are the key values which have helped them to
achieve their business goals. They are now ready to take their business
to a new level through the development of new portfolio and
marketing materials, and the purchase of a new display which will help
professionalize the look of their art at various art shows.
