Jay’s artwork is based on the principle of Native American tradition that you make use of what’s available to you in your natural environment.  He uses manmade objects left behind in nature long ago, creating images of his native culture today.  Examples might include abandoned rusted “prairie cars”, barbed wire, farm implements, and ‘whatever’ pulled from the earth incorporating these pieces into living natural images.  A little known fact about the collection of metal animals displayed at the Hospital in Browning, Montana is explained by Jay that he placed the eagle above the other animals, because eagles are mightier than everything, and is made from an old school bus signifying the importance of education.  The Eyes of the Elk are made from a tribal member’s jewelry pieces, this tribal member passed away two weeks prior to completion of the sculpture.

Jay explains that he doesn’t sketch his projects in advance.  He states, “If I don’t sketch it, it’s what it wants to be when it’s done.”
