In 1993, Thomas started
carving animal antlers with the noted Blackfeet sculptor, Dwight
Billideaux. However, from an early age, he was exposed to the
creative activities of his family, whose members are well known for
their artwork. His works consist of eagle and bear effigies, both
highly revered animals on the Blackfeet religion. The majestic
surroundings of Glacier National Park and of the Blackfeet Indian
Reservation have stimulated Thomas’s love for the outdoors and
inspired him to create his realistic animal sculptures from moose
and deer antlers. Every spring and summer, Thomas searches along
the Rocky Mountains adjacent to the Park for antlers (which are shed
by deer, moose and elk during winter months). The Blackfeet use to
make tools out of antlers and know Thomas makes unique hand made
organic carvings out of a renewable resource. |
