2005 COMMUNITY SPIRIT AWARD HONOREE

I have a constantly growing contingent of friends and associates that have gone through my counseling programs and remain to this day drug and alcohol free. In the past thirty years I have worked with literally thousands of people in many capacities of the cultural arts. They have rebuilt their own cultural pride through my classes and as a result have strengthened and continued their own personal resilience. I look upon that as healing. For the past thirty years of my life I have given my all to my community. I have given it freely. Because of health problems I don’t know how much time I have left. But as the last speaker of my language I plan to begin community tuwaduqutSid language classes on our reservation for as long as I am able." - Bruce subiyay Miller

"What Subiyay has accomplished on Skokomish has influenced all the tribal communities throughout Western Washington. From the beginning it has always been about generosity as Subiyay gives his time freely to advancing the arts among the Skokomish and other Southern Salish nations." - Michael Pavel, nominator
