What is #GivingTuesday?
#GivingTuesday is a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration.
Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.
Last year you helped us raise funds for our Rolling Rez Arts bus, providing communities on the Pine Ridge Reservation with arts workshops taught by local Lakota artists. Thank you for helping the Rolling Rez arts bus “drive” change!
Our 2018 Goal
Every year, through your generous support, First Peoples Fund has the honor of recognizing exceptional artists and culture bearers through our Community Spirit Awards and Cultural Capital programs. These artists represent the core, the very heart of our work, and exemplify what it means to selflessly pass on ancestral knowledge and traditions.
We have chosen to dedicate this year’s #GivingTuesday campaign to these artists. In celebration of their generosity, during the month of November we will be highlighting the ways in which they represent and embody three of our foundational principles:
Knowing our history and ourselves.
Honoring our ancestors and relations.
Sharing our stories and knowledge.
You can be part of this celebration of Indigenous culture bearers by helping us reach our goal of raising a full year’s grant for one of our 2019 artists. Donate on Tuesday, November 27th to help recognize the contributions of these exceptional artists and culture bearers to the continuation of Indigenous traditions.
October 2018 eSPIRIT newsletter
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our friends at the HRK Foundation, this #GivingTuesday we will be able to match every dollar donated for up to $5,000! That means your donation will have double the impact and do twice the good.
The HRK Foundation seeks to improve the fabric of communities by recognizing and addressing unequal access to resources as they work to promote healthy families and healthy communities. Their support of our effort to dedicate today's donations to an Indigenous culture bearer reflects their understanding of how culture bearers strengthen the fabric of Indigenous communities, helping us thrive and prosper. The HRK Foundation has supported First Peoples Fund for ten years.
Today's match donation is also in recognition of a phenomenally generous individual whose commitment to caring for others impacted innumerable lives, HRK trustee, Martha Hulings Kaemmer. Throughout her life, Martha's warmth and guidance provided direction and substance to everything from a gourmet cooking school to a science museum –– this wide range of interests an example of the dexterity of her wisdom. Read this beautiful tribute to her from the HRK Foundation here.
A heartfelt thanks to The HRK Foundation and our sincerest regards to you all.
