Michelle Hernandez is a Wiyot/Latina filmmaker and performance artist. Michelle was a fellow for the Native American Media Alliance Eight Annual Native American TV Writers’s Lab. She participated in the 2nd Annual Native American Writers Seminar and 3rd Annual Native American Animation Lab. Michelle’s thesis film “Douk” won the Horizon Award at the 2019 LA Skins Fest. Michelle performed in demonstration dances in her youth till her mid 20’s, traveling around the United States. Because of her experience, she sees the impact of live performance in maintaining cultural tradition. In 2019 she collaborated with Dell’Arte International to bring her filmmaking experience and cultural knowledge to the stage in the Bartow Project, an original play about Wiyot artist Rick Bartow. Recent shorts include “Things You Know But Cannot Explain” & “Work is Ceremony”, originally conceived for the Bartow Project and reimagined for the screen after the onset of the pandemic.
