I am Deborah Gabriel Brooks, a Passamaquoddy artist from Indian Township Reservation, now residing in Arizona. For over 30 years, I have woven black ash and sweetgrass baskets, a tradition passed down from my grandmother, mother, and other relatives beginning at age eight. I am fortunate to use the same molds, equipment, and tools passed down to me from family basketmakers. My work preserves Passamaquoddy heritage, blending traditional techniques with innovative designs sold online and through galleries. In my business, I have focused on educating others about our culture, mentoring youth—including my two daughters and grandson—and hosting workshops. Despite challenges with material scarcity and rising costs, I remain committed to sustaining this craft. My baskets, featured in Native art markets, reflect resilience, sovereignty, and connection to our ancestral lands. I seek to grow my business while honoring our Collective Spirit, ensuring Passamaquoddy basketmaking thrives for future generations.
